Symposium

Towards the end of Unit 2 I had an exhibition idea where I’d use a receipt stapled to a paper bag to present each rider interview, both in English, and the rider’s native language, since most are migrants.

At the end of the exhibition, two receipt printers would print a traditional 40-hour work week, vs a 112-hour work week. That’s how many hours the Brazilian rider who I first interviewed works. This doesn’t represent an average rider’s work, but averages can be misleading. The fact that anyone has to work that much, should tells us something about platform capitalism.

Even though they’re not the audience, I ask myself if riders would visit this exhibition. After all, it is about them.

What if it happened on the streets? I plan to interview new riders on specific locations and use the receipt and paper bag to display one story at each spot. Using the street as an exhibition space is an attempt to give back the research to the delivery riders as a social group.
